As the longstanding proverb, “better said than done,” may serve as an anomaly in today’s action oriented society—the brief moments in which we are able to think through the reasons that drive our actions, are oftentimes better explained through classic quotes, crafted by even more classic figures. To share a few of my favorites, these quotes further solidify the ideas that have served me well in business and in the general principals of life.
“Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” —Vince Lombardi
I’ve always found that the most successful efforts in business are those that resonate with the individuals partaking in the initiative. Without a personal goal, motive or energy level to propel the venture forward, oftentimes the project will lack a vital foundation that is needed to ultimately carry the effort to its successful fruition.
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” —Wayne Gretzky
As we know, the act of putting yourself on the line to possibly achieve something greater than the present situation is a risk. However, many of the risks I’ve taken, whether they’ve ultimately achieved success or have failed—still provided a valuable life experience and lesson that has allowed me to understand the importance of taking a shot to begin with.
“People don’t want to buy a ¼’’ drill – they want to buy a ¼’’ hole.” —Ted Levitt
Through my many years dealing with clients in all different industries with varying needs, I do believe that the above quote reflects a prominent business constant. To be successful, it is vital to understand what clients and customers need and I believe that need to be results. As opposed to talking about the features or services you can provide in a sales pitch, tell them rather about the benefits and how you are going to achieve success, what that success will look like and what it will mean for their business.
“If you’re not keeping score, you’re just practicing.” —Vince Lombardi
I find myself quoting Vince Lombardi often, but this quote above all, is one I use most frequently. In business, it is absolutely crucial to have the appropriate metrics in place to properly evaluate not only the progression of the business from a numbers-perspective, but to also hold company members accountable for its growth. Without utilizing the right tracking measurements, it is difficult to know if you are ever “winning” or “losing” in the game of business and thus figuring out how to improve.
What quotes have resonated with you over the years? Feel free to comment and discuss!
All great quotes. I have a book I read with daily inspirational quotes. However, when it comes to work ethic, I often quote my dad… “If it is worth doing, it is worth doing right. Don’t do anything half-ass.” I use that in both my personal and professional life.
At times like this it boils down to finding the information required, which as I’m sure you know can take some time. This post helped me figure out what I needed.
